blood-pressure-960x540-175x113Blood Pressure Screening - Free Blood Pressure screenings are offered on Wednesdays from 10 - 11 AM.  This service is offered through the generosity of the Swansea Ambulance Corps., who partners with the Swansea Council on Aging to offer this program at no charge. Have your Blood Pressure checked!

Community Education - We're never too young or too old to learn about...ANYTHING and everything!  At the Swansea Council on Aging we swansea_community_educationunderstand and appreciate the importance of education and being informed.  Each month, we invite guest speakers to present FREE educational workshops on a variety of topics including health, nutrition, fraud, abuse, scams and many other topics.   It's important to keep up with the latest news.  Be sure to check Swansea's Senior Scoop for the latest speakers.  In addition, many of our workshops are recorded and broadcast on public access cable channel 15.  Click on any of the links below to view some of our workshops.  We hope you'll join us at our future events!

- Live musical entertainment is offered monthly.  Be sure to check Swansea's Senior Scoop page for a preview of upcoming performers.  Join us for what promises to be a fun-filled event!

file_of_life-150x124File of Life - The File of Life is something we should all have in our homes. Fill out the emergency form, place it in the pouch provided and then place that magnetic pouch on your refrigerator. Emergency responders are trained to look for it when responding to your home for a medical emergency.  Having immediate access may save your life should you become unable to communicate.  The File of Life is available at the Swansea COA FREE of charge!

Fitness Programs -  The Swansea Council on Aging offers a variety of fitness programs.  You're never too old to exercise!

  • Drums Alive - Mondays at 9:30 AM, join us for a new and fun fitness program - Drums Alive!  
  • Tai Chi Meditated Movement - Meditated Movement is an introduction to Tai Chi. It’s perfect for beginners or others at any fitness level seeking to improve overall health – mind and body. These FREE classes are offered on Tuesdays at 10 AM.
  • Zumba - ZUMBA! Ditch the workout and join the party with “ZUMBA!” This special program is a Latin-inspired dance fitness class that incorporates Latin and International music with dance movements. Our Zumba Fitness routine is a low to moderate impact, cardio-based workout to tone the entire body. This FREE fitness program will take place on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM.  We hope you'll join us and bring a friend!

fuel_assistance_0-200x80Fuel Assistance - Any homeowner or renter who meets the income guidelines is eligible for fuel assistance through the Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program.   Swansea residents may apply at the Swansea Council on Aging.  Applications MUST BE completed on site and are not allowed to leave the premises.  The COA can be reached by calling (508) 676-1831.  Assistance is available from CFC to keep your home or apartment in repair, insulated, and weather tight by calling 508-675-2157.

Glucose Screening - Free Glucose screenings are held Wednesdays from 10 - 11 AM.  We thank the Swansea Ambulance Corp., for providing this service free of charge.

Health Insurance Counseling - The purpose of this program is to ensure that Massachusetts elders have access to free, accurate, unbiased information regarding your health care options.  Counselors inform Medicare Beneficiaries of their rights under Medicare and assist with filing claims.  Appointments are required and can be made by calling (800) 987-2510.  If you are a Swansea resident and need one-on-one counselling, please call (508) 676-1831.  Appointments are required.  NOTE:  Be sure to check out our Health Insurance page for much more information.

Intergenerational Program - We're pleased to be able to offer intergenerational get togethers between the students of Hoyle School and our seniors.  Recent visits have included story reading and Presidential skits.  It's always a special day when the students visit and a good time is had by dsc_0070-200x133all. Lawyer Referral - A legal assistance program is funded by Title IIIB through Bristol Elder Services, Inc., for people 60+.  The first consultation is free.  Additional services may be provided without cost or at reduced rates.  More information is available by contacting Seniors Law Project at (800) 244-9023 between the hours of 9am-2pm Monday through Thursday.  In addition, the local phone number of (508) 676-6265 is available 9-5 Monday through Friday.

Meals on Wheels - Meals on Wheels are available Monday through Friday to eligible seniors age 60+.  For more information, please call 508-676-1831.

medical_loan_closet-250x132Medical Loan Closet - Temporary loans of medical equipment are available at the Swansea Council on Aging.  You may be able to borrow supplies such as hospital equipment, wheelchairs, canes, commodes, walkers, etc.  If you or someone you know is in temporary need of medical equipment, or if you know of someone who would like to donate equipment, please call the COA at (508) 676-1831.

Reading Glasses (FREE) - The Swansea COA has non-prescription reading glasses available to Swansea residents FREE OF CHARGE!  These glasses are meant to be used as an aid and should NEVER be used to replace your prescription glasses.  If your optometrist has fitted you for prescription glass and/or contact lenses, you should always continue to use them unless otherwise directed.  However, if you find yourself struggling to read the morning paper or that new novel you picked up recently, you could be straining your eyes and we may be able to help.  It's never too early to protect your eyes.  For more information, or to pick up your FREE pair of non-prescription reading glasses, please stop by the COA office or call us at (508) 676-1831.  Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and pick up your free glasses today!!

Silver Alert Registration - The Swansea Council on Aging (in conjunction with the Swansea Police Department) continues The Silver Alert Program.  Its purpose is to "alert public safety departments when an adult with serious memory impairment such as Alzheimer's disease or other dementia is reported to a police department as a missing person."  By registering your loved one with Swansea's Silver Alert program, you enable us to help you in the event of such an emergency.  For more information on this program, please call the Swansea Council on Aging at 508-676-1831.

Special Needs Assistance Registry - Imagine being trapped in your home with no electricity, telephone service, or heat? What would you do without power during a hurricane, a winter storm or other natural disaster or in the days that follow? If you’re homebound, bed ridden, on oxygen or insulin dependent, what would you do? For someone with a serious medical condition or living alone, the consequences could be a matter of life or death. A “Special Needs Assistance” form is available at the Swansea COA. It’s simple —register and tell us what your special needs are. We will share your information with Emergency Responders who would be notified in the event of an emergency. Do we need to evacuate you or contact a family member on your behalf? Tax Assistance - The Swansea COA partners with AARP’s Tax Aid Assistance program to prepare income tax returns for Swansea residents with low to moderate income—RESTRICTIONS APPLY. 

Transportation - FREE Transportation is offered to Swansea seniors and disabled individuals for medical appointments and grocery shopping. Reservations are required 24 hours in advance. Registration is required—restrictions apply.

Yellow Dot/Alert - Place the yellow dot on your rear window of your vehicle. Fill out the emergency form provided.  Place it in the vinyl pouch provided and keep it in the glove compartment of your vehicle. Emergency responders are trained to look for it and will be given immediate access to your important medical information should you be unconscious in an emergency.  A photo of you should be inserted into your pouch.  (Photos can be taken by COA staff.)
